Smugglers expose communities to Covid-19

SMUGGLING syndicates have turned illegal crossing points dotted along the Limpopo River into permanent camping sites where huge consignments of goods worth millions of dollars are illegally brought in and out of the country daily, exposing communities living along the Zimbabwe-South Africa border to Covid-19. The smugglers use hired inflatable boats to ferry the smuggled goods across the river to either side of the border for varying fees ranging from R150 to R500 depending on the weight of the load. Several people, mostly regular cross border traders who make a living out of buying and selling goods sourced from South Africa, are the main culprits. They are defying lockdown regulations by illegally crossing the border, raising concerns of the spread of the coronavirus in areas lying along the border. The smugglers do not even take extra precautions to curb the spread of Covid-19 such as wearing face masks and sanitising. South Africa has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in Africa.

Irish nurse turned MP calls for joined-up healthcare approach to pandemic

AN IRISH MP who returned to nursing to support the battle against Covid-19 believes health and social care must become “one united front” to overcome the virus. Maria Caulfield, the Conservative MP for Lewes, returned to the NHS in March as a cancer nurse treating patients with Covid-19 at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Brompton. She had answered the appeal by Health Secretary Matt Hancock for former doctors and nurses to help support medical efforts during the coronavirus outbreak. Ms Caulfield, who was born in Wandsworth, London in 1973, to parents who came to Britain in the 1950s from counties Longford and Cork, has seen first-hand the need for a ‘joined-up’ social welfare system that would see both care homes and hospitals working in tandem. She told The Irish Post: “When the coronavirus crisis first hit, it was clear the NHS was going to come under huge pressure. Advertisement “I wanted to do my bit to help out. I still had my nursing registration and so I returned to my old hospital working on the wards.…

State OK's Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties to advance to Stage 2.5 economic recovery

SOUTHLAND – (INT) – San Bernardino and Orange counties have joined Riverside County in reopening their economies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) approved the revised request of each county to reopen more businesses under Governor Newsom’s accelerated Phase 2. The revision was based on new criteria announced by the state. The following locations can now reopen in Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties: destination retail stores, including shopping malls and swap meets; dine-in restaurants; and schools with modifications. However, local health orders prohibiting primary schools for grades K-12 is still in effect until June 19th. Riverside County Supervisors Chairman V. 'Our clubs may not survive' Calls for support fund to protect Irish sports organisations during pandemic

CONCERNS for the future of sporting organisations across Ireland have led to the call for a support fund to be established to see them through the coronavirus pandemic. The Federation of Irish Sport has called on the Government to create a Resilience Fund and set up a task force to ensure “the survival and reignition of sport organisations nationwide”. The Federation, whose members include the 81 National Governing Bodies and 29 Local Sports Partnerships that organise sport and physical activity in Ireland, issued a statement on behalf of those members this week - claiming the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic have been devastating for them. “There has been no organised sport in Ireland for 10 weeks,” they said. “The stark reality is that the knock-on effects of Covid-19 financially for all sports organisations in the country are devastating.” Advertisement They explained: “Within the last week, we have seen a number of our major team sports talk publicly of losses up to 70 per cent of their turnover. “Unfortunately…

Coronavirus in Oklahoma: How much did state pay out in fraudulent unemployment claims?

Oklahoma may have paid out tens in millions of dollars in fraudulent unemployment claims since the start of the pandemic, records show. In a blunt email, the state's chief information officer, Jerry Moore, blames the loss on a disconnect in culture at the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, the state agency responsible for processing claims. "Fraud is certainly a crime, but I feel it is just as criminal an act to not perform the civic responsibilities of the services entrusted to us," Moore wrote in the email Thursday to the director of another state agency, the Office of Management and Enterprise Services. "I do not know how to move forward and help Oklahomans without business process and leadership change.

In one of the biggest political protests Belarus has seen this year, more than 1,000 demonstrators rallied in the capital, Minsk, on May 24 to oppose longtime President Alyaksandr Lukashenka's bid to run for a sixth term in the August 9 vote. 'Dominic Cummings Was Lurking Here': Barnard Castle joke blue plaque pokes fun at alleged visit

A fake blue plaque has appeared in Barnard Castle poking fun at Dominic Cummings' alleged visit to the town during the lockdown period. The prime minister's chief advisor travelled to County Durham in March to self-isolate with his family while official guidelines warned against long-distance journeys, apparently because he feared that he and his wife would be left unable to care for their son. Mr Cummings is accused of travelling to Barnard Castle - something he has neither confirmed nor denied - while staying at a property adjacent to his parents' home in Durham. Barnard Castle is around 30 miles from where Mr Cummings was staying, meaning if he had travelled to the town on April 12, it would have been against the lockdown restrictions. The sign on the wall in the town reads: "DOMINIC CUMMINGS WAS LURKING IN THESE PARTS, 12.04.2020."
